Here it is! 365 films for 365 days.
These are all significant movies that we haven’t seen, taken (largely) from one of three lists. First, the 2012 Sight & Sound Best Films list, as voted on by prominent critics and directors. We combined the critics list and the directors list, eliminated duplicates, and eliminated films we’d seen. This gave us 80-odd films. We then added Roger Ebert’s “Great Movies” series (again removing duplicates and titles we’d seen). Ebert’s list included more “popular” films — the Sight & Sound poll skewed toward artistic merit. Continuing our populist trend, we added all the Best Picture Academy Award winners (again removing redundant titles) since the inception of the Academy.
We ordered the films chronologically (mostly — sometimes the dating is vague, if for instance a film was censored and not released until years after it was shot, as is the case for Ivan the Terrible Pt. 2). We dropped documentaries, as not being immediately relevant. This left us with a few empty slots, which we filled with movies that seemed significant or necessary for completeness, and yet didn’t appear on any of the lists. (For instance, it seemed sloppy to watch L’Avventura and L’Eclisse , the first and third films of Antonioni’s trilogy, but not La Notte, the second.)
Key:
Hyperlinks are Sight and Sound Critics/Directors poll films.
Italics are Ebert “Great Movies.”
Unformatted text with [“] after the titles are Best Picture Winners. Dates are the year of their win — hence the double dates for early films.
Underlined text without hyperlinks are films not on any list, but that we felt ought to be included.
